A towering figure in Chicago’s great Mexican-American community, Arturo Velasquez was a dedicated family man, a father of four wonderful children, a committed husband to his wife of seventy-two years, a highly successful businessman and entrepreneur, and a highly respected community leader. Although he did not have much formal education himself, Mr. Velasquez always understood the importance and value of a good education. He strongly encouraged the education of his children, he served as a Trustee of the City Colleges of Chicago for ten years, and he was a vigorous advocate for education in the Latino community. Throughout his life, Mr. Velasquez worked hard, became a lifelong learner and an educated man, achieved great success, and gave back to the community. He served as a role model to many and paved the way so that others might achieve.

The Arturo Velasquez Scholarship Fund was established to provide financial assistance for deserving students enrolled at the Arturo Velasquez Institute. Scholarship monies are to be used to defray educational costs (tuition, fees, or books). In rare cases, scholarship funds may be used as matching funds (maximum $250 one-time scholarship) to pay a prior balance at the Arturo Velasquez Institute if that will make it possible for the applicant to re-enroll in classes.
