Florence Coles Ballenger, a former faculty member at Kennedy King College, grew up in Decatur, Illinois. The 1925 alumna of Eastern Illinois State Teachers College (now Eastern Illinois University) always felt that education was the key to everything. After graduating from Eastern Illinois University, she taught in Oak Park, Chicago?s Wilson Junior College (now Kennedy King College) and St. Petersburg (Florida College) retiring at age 70. However, she continued to volunteer as an English tutor.
The scholarship provides financial support to students who have demonstrated academic excellence and commitment to civic service. The scholarship is credited to a balance in the student's account resulting from tuition charges, fees or the cost of books and supplies, after all federal and state awards have been applied. The scholarship is awarded annually and covers two (2) academic semesters provided academic standards are maintained and there is a financial need.
